The endless artificial smiles, the miles of self trickery
All of the fuzzy edged moments of reality, finally becoming clear
Acting was her life, putting on her face each morning
She recited the lines that were written,
With experience she became much better at ad-libbing her part.
Always ready to say what they all wanted to hear.
To keep the illusion in tact
Her mother scowled from the audience, never quite happy with the performance
Her father, sweet, silent, never dared give his opinion of the play
There was reality once. There was a time of self expression.
She was happy then
Believing that all the other players were off stage and being real, this was her undoing
Her eyes stung, the tears flowed, as she realized
Her reality was their bit part.
She put on her face again
The actress brilliantly playing again, all who watched, awed by her stoic performance
She buried her true artistry and along with it her sense of decency
Always the picture of strength
The audience never aware of the fragile passion and smoldering within.
She went searching for other parts.
Interesting little bit parts and a couple off beat, starring roles
She started believing the illusion herself
Breaking her contract just to see if she would get caught
Then it came along
The ONE. The part an actress looks for her whole life.
She wanted to put so much of herself into the role.
Never had a part touched her inside like this one.
She could have had the starring role
Something made her walk away.
She stopped performing that day.
She no longer put on her face in the morning.
The lines of her weary life showing more deeply around her eyes.
She searches each day now for her truth
No more acting. No more artificial emotions
She wears a genuine smile each morning now
Another actress might take that perfect role
But in her heart, it is hers
If there is to be another perfect role in her life,
